We have no alternative but to teach online during the Covid-19 pandemic, while it is still an opportunity for us to obtain more high-quality teaching resources. Thanks to the convenience of online education, we invited Jones Yu, associate professor of Wentworth Institute of Technology, to teach the class of 2018 of E-commerce major. Professor Yu is the Ph.D. of Computer and Information Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT), the lifetime associate professor at Wentworth Institute of Technology(WIT), and the affiliate professor at Harvard Medical School(HMS) and Tufts University. He has directed a number of leading-edge research projects and published over 50 academic papers. He designed and developed the course of Mobile App Development, which integrated his working experience of over 9 years in the wireless network industry and 5 years of teaching experience as well.
With the help of Mr. Yang Xiao, the class was opened on Zoom, an online-teaching platform, at 8:00 am on April 23, 2020 (8:00 pm on April 22 local time in U.S.), and 50 students majoring in E-commerce joined the class.
Professor Yu introduced the course of Android Development of Wentworth Institute of Technology, and showed some works of students of WIT. After reviewing some knowledge together with students through a case, he introduced a simple but practical control of WebView and led them to complete another case study. To make the students have a better understanding, Professor Yu presented several problems in scientific research and agreed to help them solve these problems in the future.
Most of the students said that they can understand Professor Yu's teaching in English and follow him to design their own Apps. Such an active class provided them with an opportunity to learn from an excellent foreign professor, and enhanced their confidence in learning mobile app development. Students also said that Professor Yu was so thoughtful that the lesson was easily understood by most of them, and many students signed up to participate in Professor Yu's projects of mobile medical care after class, so as to improve their practical ability as well as research ability.
Professor Yu provided an American-style class for the students by his online teaching experience during the epidemic. Shortening the distance between teachers and students, online education creates more contents and forms of teaching, and promotes students' interest and enthusiasm in learning.
